“DB World” begins engineering work and construction of structures in the Senegalese port of Ndayane

Dubai Ports World Group (DP World) announced yesterday the start of engineering and construction works in the Senegalese port of Ndayane, at a cost of $1.2 billion, a project that is expected to transform Senegal into a center for global trade.
The group said, in a statement, that the drilling equipment ship “Willem van Ruebroek”, which arrived at the port, will dredge a five-kilometre-long shipping channel in an essential step for building this modern, high-capacity port, designed to raise the level of infrastructure for commercial activity in Senegal. She explained that the first phase of the project includes an 840-meter berth and a five-kilometre-long canal capable of handling the largest container ships in the world, adding that the construction work for this phase will provide sufficient capacity to handle about 1.2 million 20-foot standard containers annually, while the phase will add The second includes another berth with a length of 410 metres, transforming Ndiane into a leading logistics center in West Africa.
Ndayane Port relies on the success of DB World in the Port of Dakar, which achieved growth in handling volumes that rose from 300,000 20-foot TEUs in 2008 to 800,000 TEUs in 2023.
After a recent meeting with the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of DP World Group, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, affirmed the company’s long-term commitment to Senegal, saying: “We trust Senegal’s economic potential, and we fully support… “The government’s full ambitions to achieve the country’s progress.” He pointed out that “Ndiane Port will work to upgrade Senegal’s position and achieve a positive impact on trade movement across the African continent.”
Bin Sulayem added: “Our plans will extend beyond the port, as we will develop an economic zone near the port and Belize Diane International Airport, and this economic zone is expected to create new job opportunities.”
