The Swiss Parliament boosts defense spending in the 2025 budget

The Swiss Parliament on Thursday approved increases in defense spending in the 2025 budget, in addition to cuts in development aid, social benefits and funding for federal staff.
According to decisions approved by Parliament, military spending is scheduled to increase by 530 million Swiss francs ($590 million) from 5.7 million Swiss francs in 2023.

Increase military spending

Military spending is scheduled to rise by 2023 to 1% of GDP, while development aid, which totaled 3.3 billion Swiss francs last year, will decrease by 0.43% of GDP, by 110 million Swiss francs.
Spending on asylum-related matters is technically classified as development aid in Switzerland.
Development aid, including these costs, amounted to 0.6% of GDP in 2023.
