The birth of quintuplets in Shakhbout Medical City with the participation of 45 medical specialists

Abu Dhabi, December 24 / WAM / Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City announced today the exceptional birth of five premature twins, in an emergency caesarean section in which 45 medical specialists participated.

Pregnancy with quintuplets is considered an extremely rare case, as such cases occur in approximately one case out of every 45 to 60 million pregnancies. A successful birth in this case is considered a major achievement as it includes many complications and risks for both the mother and her newborn children.

This pioneering achievement highlights the exceptional capabilities of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in providing advanced health care for mothers and newborns, and is considered a milestone in neonatology in the UAE, as it is a documented case in which all five babies who were born after only 25 weeks of pregnancy survived. They were discharged from the hospital and are in good health.

The operation, in which 45 medical specialists participated, including nine neonatal consultants, four obstetric consultants, in addition to ten nurses specializing in neonatal intensive care, was successful without any complications, as births in the twenty-fifth week of pregnancy are classified as It was a very premature birth, and therefore the quintuplets required direct and intensive health care due to their very low birth weights, which ranged between 588 and 801 grams, while the case of one of them required… Children undergo surgeries to treat eye and intestinal complications.

The mother left the hospital one week after giving birth, while her five children joined her later after receiving the necessary health care in the neonatal intensive care unit. The family currently continues to receive health care and regular follow-up at the outpatient clinic of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, which ensures continuity of support from the staff of the Pediatrics Department and multiple related specialties.
