Taiwan Defense: The opposition plan to reduce funding poses a threat to security

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has warned of a serious impact on security following opposition parties passing laws that will require cutting defense spending by about NT$80 billion (US$2.45 billion), at a time when the island faces a growing Chinese military threat.

< p>The Taiwanese Ministry stated, in a statement reported by “Reuters”, that it may need to reduce its plan for the defense budget by 28% next year, equivalent to 80 billion Taiwanese dollars, To comply with the new financing requirements.

The Ministry stated that this is expected to have a serious impact on the military structure and combat readiness of the national forces.

It explained that the modernization of major military equipment will stop, and it will be difficult to make payments for equipment that is needed. They were purchased according to deals, which will lead to postponements or cancellations.

Taiwan’s Cabinet proposed in August to increase defense spending 7.7% year-on-year to NT$647 billion, which is A record level for Taiwan, which is working to increase its fighter planes and missiles to enhance deterrence against the growing threat from Beijing.

The ruling party lost its parliamentary majority after elections held in January, and is locked in a confrontation with the opposition on many issues.
