"Abu Dhabi Environment" Launches a program to measure, report and verify carbon emissions

Abu Dhabi, December 26 / WAM / The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi launched a program to measure, report and verify carbon emissions in accordance with international standards, with the aim of studying carbon pricing mechanisms and the possibility of applying them, as a pivotal step to address carbon emissions and climate change in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The Authority has made great progress in studying carbon management and trading mechanisms, and the possibility of implementing them as a pivotal step to address carbon emissions and climate change in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. These efforts represent an important step in aligning Abu Dhabi’s policies with international best practices, and enhancing the country’s commitment to achieving its national and global climate goals.
This step aims to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy and support sectors that are difficult to remove carbon from, as the Authority has invested in this field over the past years and during the preparation for the Conference of the Parties (COP28), significant resources in cooperation with its partners at the federal and local levels, in addition to the private sector. .
Studies conducted by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi showed that establishing a local carbon pricing system could support industries, especially the industrial sectors that produce the largest amount of emissions.
This program provides the basis for accurate tracking of greenhouse gas emissions, paving the way for implementing an effective carbon management mechanism that contributes to achieving environmental sustainability goals.
The program aims to unify and improve the quality of greenhouse gas emissions inventory reports in the industrial and energy sectors in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and align local efforts with global best practices, to enhance international competitiveness, manage emissions in the long term, support technical innovation and enhance efforts to achieve the goals of the global climate change agenda. In the region.
The program provides reliable data that meets global climate requirements, such as those set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and is consistent with the enhanced transparency framework of the Paris Agreement, and with international agreements on initiatives aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, and enhances the results of the UAE agreement approved at the Conference of the Parties. (COP 28).
The program requires that large facilities with high carbon emissions monitor and report their emissions and verify them annually through a third party, with the first reports due in 2026.
The system, target sectors, and emissions volume were developed in consultation with concerned parties from the public and private sectors to ensure cooperation and compatibility.
Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said that Abu Dhabi has strengthened its leadership in the field of climate action by working closely with partners from government agencies, industry and energy sectors, as new mandatory measures for measurement, reporting and verification have been integrated within the broader framework of carbon accounting.
She added that data transparency is vital for evaluating climate policies, such as carbon pricing mechanisms, which support Abu Dhabi’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 22% by 2027, and contribute to the sustainable economic growth of the emirate, stressing the Authority’s commitment to take the necessary steps proactively, in accordance with national paths towards achieving Climate neutrality by 2050.
His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, affirmed the department’s commitment to continuing its pioneering role in enhancing cooperation with all partners and parties concerned to accelerate the transformation in the energy sector, in order to build a sustainable future and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, stressing that the measurement, reporting and verification program It contributes to providing accurate data necessary to track carbon emissions, ensures transparency, builds trust, and enables effective climate action.
