Finland.. An investigation into the damage to an undersea power cable on an oil tanker

Finnish authorities have boarded an oil tanker in the Baltic Sea as part of an investigation into a malfunction in an undersea power cable between Finland and Estonia.

Ship malfunctions

Police in Helsinki said on Thursday that maritime authorities stopped the tanker “Eagle S” registered in the Cook Islands and took control of the ship. The operation came a day after the malfunction that occurred in the “East Link 2” submarine electricity cable, and other cables in the same waters were damaged.

Transfer in violation of the law

Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted that the tanker is part of Russia’s shadow fleet, a group of ships that Russia uses unofficially to circumvent sanctions, for example, to transport oil to other countries.
“It is necessary to be able to prevent the dangers posed by ships of the Russian Shadow Fleet,” Stubb wrote on the X platform after meeting with police and border guard commanders on Thursday.
