A significant increase… new numbers for the percentage of homeless people in America

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development announced an 18.1% increase in the number of homeless people this year 2024.
This is a significant increase, driven mostly by the lack of affordable housing in addition to devastating natural disasters, and the increase in the number of immigrants in several regions of the country.

The department explained that federally required statistics collected from across the country starting last January showed that more than 770,000 people registered as homeless.
She explained that this number does not include some people and does not include those who stay with friends or families because they do not have a place of their own.
This increase is higher than the 12% recorded in 2023, which the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development attributed to rising rents and the end of Corona pandemic aid.

The increase in the number of homeless people in 2023 was also driven by the presence of people experiencing homelessness for the first time.

Overall numbers indicate that 23 out of every 10,000 people in the United States are homeless, with blacks overrepresented among the homeless category.
“No American should face homelessness, and the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that every family has access to the affordable, safe, high-quality housing they deserve,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Adrienne Todman said in a statement.
She added that the focus must remain on “evidence-based efforts to prevent and end homelessness.”
