Sudan – More than 150 people were killed and injured in an attack on a hospital in East Darfur

Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said on the X website: “As a result of this tragedy, the total death toll from health facility-related attacks during the war in Sudan has exceeded 2,000.”

During nearly three years of conflict, the World Health Organization has confirmed the deaths of 2,036 people in 213 attacks on healthcare facilities, including an attack on Friday night in El Daein.

This latest attack resulted in the injury of 89 people, including eight health workers, and damaged the hospital’s pediatrics, obstetrics, and emergency departments. Thus, the total number of people injured in attacks on health care facilities during the war so far has reached more than 720 people.

In addition to the huge human losses, Dr. Tedros noted that attacks on healthcare facilities have immediate and long-term impacts on communities that are in dire need of regular emergency medical services.

Al Daein Teaching Hospital has now stopped operating due to the severe damage caused by the attack, which has led to a severe interruption of basic medical services.

WHO supports its local partners in the health sector to fill the urgent gap by strengthening the capacities of other health facilities.

This includes supporting primary health care services to provide outpatient care, pediatric, gynecological and obstetric care, increasing the capacity to treat injured people, and providing injury treatment supplies and basic medicines.

The Director-General of the United Nations World Health Organization said: “Much blood has been spilled and unbearable suffering has occurred. It is time to calm the conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians and health and humanitarian workers.”

He stressed that health care should never be a goal, stressing that peace is the best medicine.
