NATO official: Russia may launch an unconventional attack that will cause losses to the alliance
James Appathurai, a Canadian diplomat in charge of hybrid and cyber warfare at NATO, said there is a strong possibility of Russia launching an unconventional attack on NATO countries.
He added in an interview with the London-based Sky News network that the alliance’s 32 member states were already in a “boiling frog” position due to possible Russian hybrid attacks across Europe, the United States and Canada.
He pointed to the increase in actions such as cutting cables at the bottom of the sea, sabotaging buildings and planting incendiary devices inside a cargo plane since Russia launched its comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Failed plots
“We can certainly count dozens, up to 100 for sure, but there are a lot of failed plots,” Appathurai told the network.
Appathurai, who is working on NATO’s strategy to confront hybrid warfare, added that there is a “real possibility” of an unconventional Russian attack that could cause “significant” casualties.
He added that the volume of attacks is gradually increasing to a level that was “completely unacceptable” just 5 years ago.
