Ecuadorian Minister of Risk Management Jorge Carrillo reported in a press conference about a “dangerous situation” and warned that the country may witness similar conditions in the future.
He added, “Unfortunately, we recorded two deaths” in the Manta region in southwestern Ecuador.
A third death was recorded in Chile, where a 30-year-old man was found dead on a beach, according to the country’s navy.
He expected that the strong waves would continue “in the coming days,” but they would calm down a little starting Monday and return to normal in the first days of the new year.
Pictures published by local media showed that water flooded piers and public squares in parts of Peru, prompting residents to flee to the highlands.
The Peruvian Navy said that waves are formed on the ocean surface as a result of winds off the American coast.
Many beaches in the center and north of the country were closed to avoid any risks to people’s lives, according to the authorities.
Many fishing boats were damaged.
“We need the authorities’ help. We lost about 100 boats here,” a fisherman told Peruvian television.
He added, “I am seventy years old and have never witnessed such strange and powerful waves.”
Rescue fishermen
On Saturday, the Navy rescued 31 fishermen stranded at sea, while local radio reported that about 180 others were still at sea.
In the city of Callao, adjacent to the capital Lima and where the largest port in Peru is located, the beaches were closed and tourists were prevented from visiting them.
The mayor of the La Cruz region in the north of the country, Roberto Carrillo Zavala, said, “Fishermen are the most affected,” after he viewed the damage from a helicopter accompanied by Defense Minister Walter Estudio Chavez.
He added, “We hope that the situation will not deteriorate further, as this will greatly affect the economy.”
The phenomenon began on Christmas Day and will continue until January 1, according to the Peruvian National Emergency Operations Center.
