Snowfall accumulated at night in various parts of England and Wales, and in high areas, the snow density reached about 40 centimetres.
Transportation disturbances
Manchester International Airport announced at midday the resumption of air traffic after being suspended for several hours. The airport authorities warned on the X platform that “there may be a delay in take-off and landing times while our teams work to defrost the planes and open the runways.”
Liverpool Airport, which is also located in northern England, announced the resumption of traffic, but advised travelers to contact airlines due to expected traffic delays.
Leeds City Airport closed its runway, and expressed its hope that navigation would resume during the day, while other airports that were closed overnight resumed air traffic, such as Birmingham and Bristol.
Accidents resulting from bad weather conditions, or vehicles stuck due to the accumulation of snow, led to the closure of major axes in the road network in the United Kingdom, and the authorities also warned of the formation of layers of ice on several roads.
The weather conditions caused the suspension of work on at least one train line in Leeds, and the power outage in many homes in England and Wales.
The Meteorological Authority expected weather conditions to improve during the day, while flood warnings were issued.
Cancellation of flights in Germany
In Germany, many airports were forced to adjust flight schedules due to heavy snowfall and rain.
Frankfurt Airport authorities (west), the largest in the country, confirmed the cancellation of 120 flights out of about 1,090 scheduled for Sunday.
A spokesman for the airport authorities explained to Agence France-Presse that “snow must be removed from the take-off and landing runways,” and the process of “defrosting aircraft also becomes more complex and demanding.”

In Munich, the authorities canceled 35 flights overnight out of 750 take-offs and landings scheduled at the country’s second largest airport.
Berlin Airport authorities were forced to cancel 17 flights and delay 30 as of Friday evening with the onset of bad weather conditions.
The German Meteorological Service warned of snow and rain during Sunday night, and advised residents to avoid unnecessary movements.
