Snow that has not occurred in a decade… Millions in eastern America are facing harsh conditions
A severe storm hit the United States on Sunday, and the path of the severe storm is expected to affect areas inhabited by more than 60 million people.
Weather in America
Polar air is expected to blow over the eastern half of the United States until Monday, which will lead to widespread disruptions in transportation and travel.
The National Meteorological Agency warned of ice, snow and arctic winds in states from the central plains to eastern states bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
Storm warnings were issued from western Kansas to the coastal states of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, a stretch of more than 2,400 kilometers.
Harsh weather conditions in America
The weather agency warned that a “devastating winter storm” would affect these areas until Monday, “with widespread heavy snowfall and ice accumulation.”
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said that the storm will bring heavy snowfall and wind speeds exceeding 64 kilometers per hour in parts of Kansas and Missouri.
He pointed out that the amount of snowfall will exceed 38 centimetres, which is unprecedented levels “for a decade,” and the first major storm in 2025 caused an obstruction in travel, as Kansas City International Airport announced the suspension of its operations on Saturday “due to the rapid accumulation of ice.”
Heavy snow in America
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas confirmed in a post on social media that air traffic had resumed after the runways and taxiways were opened.
Parts of the eastern states of New York and Pennsylvania are also facing “heavy snow” coming from the Great Lakes region, which could reach a thickness of up to 61 centimeters, according to the National Weather Service.
A snowstorm will also hit the Central Plains by Sunday morning, with the National Weather Service saying that “snow conditions will make travel extremely dangerous, with impassable roads and a high risk of drivers being stranded.”

Weather in Washington
It is expected that Washington, DC, will be covered with snow accumulations more than 12 centimeters high, with the possibility of it reaching twice that in neighboring areas.
Those concerned warned of freezing rain and snow falling from Kansas eastward to Kentucky and Virginia, paving the way for ice to accumulate on the roads, making travel risky, and leading to the fall of trees and power lines, and possibly depriving millions of electricity during the cold wave.
The National Weather Service predicted widespread tree damage and “long-term power outages,” and conditions could be particularly dangerous in the Appalachian Mountains region, where a tornado in late September swept through several Southeastern states, including Kentucky.
