After the earthquake, small tsunami waves hit the shores of Japan without losses
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 36 kilometers and 18 kilometers off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kiyoshi region at 21:19 (12:19 GMT), according to the US Geological Survey.
Japanese meteorological warning
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of possible tsunami waves up to one meter high, urging residents to stay away from the coast.
She wrote on the X platform: “A tsunami can strike several times. Please do not go into the sea and do not approach coastal areas.”
The earthquake caused tsunami waves in some local ports, about 20 centimeters high, but did not cause any damage, according to the meteorological agency.
Local media reported that no casualties were recorded as a result of the earthquake, while live broadcasts from the area via the NHK public station showed that no apparent damage occurred, while the sea appeared calm and maritime and traffic movements were in a normal condition.
1500 tremors per year
Japan, which lies above the meeting points of four tectonic plates in the western Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is among the most seismically active countries in the world.
The archipelago, with a population of about 125 million people, records approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually, which constitute approximately 18% of the earthquakes the world witnesses.
While most of these earthquakes are mild, the damage that may result varies according to their location and depth below the Earth’s surface.
