The European Aviation Environment Report 2025 recommends increased use of sustainable fuels

BRUSSELS, 14 JANUARY / WAM / The European Commission announced the release of the fourth edition of the European Aviation Environment Report, which provides a comprehensive review of the aviation sector’s environmental performance and the progress made since the previous 2022 edition.

The report makes recommendations on reducing aviation’s impact on climate change, noise and air quality and recommends focusing on measures such as increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuel, taking advantage of air traffic management improvements and adopting more fuel-efficient technologies.

By implementing these measures, emissions could be reduced by at least two-thirds by 2050, compared to a business as usual scenario and the remaining gap to achieve net zero could then be closed through initiatives outside the sector, the European Commission said.

Since the previous report, there have been significant developments in the areas of sustainable aviation fuels and improvements in air traffic management performance.

However, the expected growth in air traffic demand, at European and global level, requires more work and aviation, like all other modes of transport, must play its part and contribute to achieving the EU’s ambitious goal of achieving a climate neutral future by 2050. .

Air transport is expected to grow to 11.8 million annual flights by then.

According to the report, this growth does not necessarily have to come at the expense of increased emissions. Decoupling air transport from environmental impact is not only crucial, but it is also something that can be achieved.
