The World Health Organization advises against imposing restrictions on travel and trade with Tanzania after the outbreak of the Marburg epidemic

The World Health Organization Emergency Fund launched $3 million, in addition to $50,000 that the organization had previously contributed, to support the government of Tanzania in controlling the outbreak of the Marburg epidemic. The Director-General of the Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, said: There are still no approved treatments or vaccines for the disease. Marburg disease, although several are under development, but outbreaks can be quickly stopped through proven public health measures to prevent infection, as Tanzania did in the first outbreak of Marburg disease in 2023.
He pointed out that Tanzania confirmed the outbreak of the virus in the northwestern Kagera region, strengthened its response and monitoring of cases, established treatment centers and mobile laboratories to examine samples, and deployed national response teams.
Adhanom added that given the low global risk of the epidemic spreading; Given the strong capabilities of the Government of Tanzania, the World Health Organization advises against imposing restrictions on trade and travel with Tanzania.
