Trump signs an order withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization

During his speech at the White House hours after his inauguration, Trump said that the United States pays much more to the United Nations than China, adding, “The World Health Organization defrauded us.”
The support that the United States provides to the World Health Organization is vital for its work, especially since it is the largest donor to the Geneva-based organization.
Its withdrawal is expected to push the organization to undertake restructuring and may lead to further disruption of global health initiatives.
This is the second time that Trump has sought to sever ties with the World Health Organization. During his first term, the Trump administration issued a withdrawal notice during Trump’s first term, accusing the organization of being excessively under the influence of China during the early stages of the Covid outbreak.
This step was later reversed under the administration of former President Joe Biden.
In his new executive order, Trump directed US agencies to suspend “any future transfer of funds, support, or resources from the United States Government to the World Health Organization,” and to “identify trusted and transparent partners from the United States and around the world to carry out the necessary activities that the World Health Organization has previously undertaken.” the previous”.
Health security review
The administration also announced plans to review and rescind Biden’s 2024 Global Health Security Strategy, which is designed to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats, “as soon as possible.”
The timing of the US withdrawal comes amid growing concerns about the possibility of the current outbreak of the bird influenza (H5N1) virus turning into a pandemic, as dozens have been infected and one person has lost his life in the United States.
Meanwhile, WHO member states have been negotiating since late 2021 to craft the world’s first such treaty on pandemic prevention and response, and now negotiations are set to continue without US participation.
