“We have a treasure” .. Trump reveals his position on imposing customs duties on China

US President Donald Trump has announced that he would prefer not to impose customs duties on China, noting that he simply wanted “fairness” in the trade exchanges between his country and Beijing.
In response to a question during an interview broadcast by “Fox News” whether he can reach an agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Taiwan and Trade, he replied, “I can do it because we have something they want, we have a treasure.”

Trade relations between America and China

“We have a very significant influence on the tariffs, and it is preferable not to have to use it, but it is a tremendous influence on China,” the US President said.
Earlier, Donald Trump, via video in front of a group of owners of companies gathered at the Davos Economic Forum, said that “everything we want is fairness. We simply want the rules of a fair game” with China.
In response to these statements, China confirmed that commercial differences with the United States can be resolved “through dialogue and consultation.”

Economic cooperation between China and America

“Economic and commercial cooperation between China and the United States is beneficial to both parties,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a periodic press conference.
“The commercial wars and those related to customs definitions are not in the interest of anyone or in the interest of the whole world,” she added.
China is the third largest importer in the United States by value, after the European Union and Mexico, but represented the country’s main trade deficit in bilateral exchanges, worth $ 270 billion (257 billion euros) during the first 11 months of 2024.

Imposing American customs duties

During the election campaign, Trump promised to go further and impose customs duties between 10% and 20% on all products that enter the United States regardless of its source, and up to 60% on Chinese products.
The US President threatened Canada and Mexico to impose customs duties by 25%, and add 10% to the fees originally imposed on Chinese products.
On his return to the White House, Trump confirmed that he would impose customs duties announced on Canadian and Chinese products from February 1.
