United Nations: Preventing UNRWA from operating may undermine the ceasefire in Gaza

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), warned that preventing UNRWA from operating could undermine the ceasefire in Gaza and frustrate the hopes of people who have gone through untold suffering.

The Commissioner-General said in a statement issued today by the agency that in just the first three days of the ceasefire, UNRWA brought food to one million people. Agency teams have already distributed food to about 300,000 people, including in northern Gaza.

He pointed out that the ceasefire is a window of hope, as it allows the agency to bring Basic supplies have been stuck for months across the region: such as tents, mattresses and blankets, pointing out that commercial supplies are necessary to reduce people’s dependence on humanitarian aid.

He explained that at the same time, as the guns fell silent, invisible scars began to appear. This is due to the enormous trauma of 15 long months of war. Since the start of the war, UNRWA experts and mental health specialists have been able to reach more than half a million boys and girls.

He stressed that UNRWA’s work must continue in Gaza and throughout Occupied Palestinian Territory.
