Sweden is released from a Bulgarian ship after being destroyed by a data cable
This comes after excluding a preliminary suspicion that sabotage is the reason for the damage of a marine optical cable between Sweden and Latvia.
Fears about Russian sabotage works
The damage to the cable that was running between the city of Vincentspus in Latvia and the Gotland island in Sweden was monitored on January 26, and the Swedish authorities confiscated the ship later that day.
This was among a series of recently destroyed marine cables, which intensified concerns about Russian sabotage and spying in the region.
Prosecutors said in a statement, that an investigation into a possible role for the Vegin Vehler “explained that it is not a huge sabotage.”
Business sabotage of marine cables
Public Prosecutor Mats Ynovst stated that the ship had already caused the cable.
He added: But after the investigations of the crime site, analysis of confiscated equipment and collecting certificates, “we can definitely say that this is not a sabotage issue.”
The Bulgarian shipping company Navibolgar denied that one of its ships had intentionally destroyed the cable.
