Asia leads regional efforts to develop sustainable fuel technologies in the aviation sector

Abu Dhabi, February 11/ WAM/ Airlines experts discussed during the discussion session held within the activities of the “ICAO World Seminar Fourth Support for Implementation 2025” and the first version of the “Global Sustainable Aviation Market”, the efforts made to accelerate the shift to clean energy in the aviation sector, with a focus on Promote sustainable fuel use.

Fabrice Espinoza, founder and CEO of the Asia Association for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, said that the association seeks to enhance regional cooperation in the Asia region to support the application of sustainable fuel in the aviation sector, noting that the main goal of the association is to create a comprehensive regional approach that includes governments and public and private industries in order to accelerate Adopting sustainable fuel to avoid in the region.

He added that the association, its goals are based on five main pillars, most notably enhancing regional cooperation by setting joint policies to ensure fair competition in the sustainable fuel industry, ensuring the provision of an appropriate environment for all parties concerned with airlines and sustainable fuel manufacturers and financiers.

He pointed out that the association is working to build capacity in the region by developing local skills capable of meeting the needs of the market and achieving technological independence, which allows the region the ability to export sustainable fuel in the future.

Regarding technology, Espinoza explained that the association seeks to enhance innovation in new technologies such as “converting alcohol into jet fuel” and “energy to fluid technologies”, which is one of the most important technological trends in the field of sustainable fuel.

In the context of supporting sustainability in the region, he stated that the association also focuses on the participation of knowledge between the public and private sectors to enhance cooperation and increase the ability to achieve sustainability goals.

Espinoza pointed out that the association is certain that these basic pillars will contribute to accelerating its goals in the near future, stressing the importance of regional and technological cooperation as major factors in the success of the shift to sustainable fuel for aviation in the Asia region.

In the context of her participation in the discussion session, Jin Hobby, director of the Environmental Program at the International Civil Aviation Organization “ICAO”, said that the discussion session focused mainly on the political framework that we need to implement and accelerate the use of clean energy in the aviation sector.

She added that the discussions dealt with many important issues such as the global framework that was adopted at the “CAAF3” conference in the Emirates in 2023, noting the importance of balance between all the basic pillars of this transformation.

She stressed the necessity of preserving the environmental goals that have been set, and monitoring progress towards achieving them, explaining the importance of setting a strong framework that provides a solid basis for the transition towards clean energy.

She said that everything related to capacity building is vital, and that all countries should be guaranteed that all countries are able to participate in this shift towards clean energy, as all countries have shown great interest in being part of this transformation.

Hobby also talked about the issue of financing, and stressed the necessity of guaranteeing the necessary investments to achieve this shift, noting the discussions that took place on coordinating efforts and allowing this sector to grow without restrictions, and the role that the International Civil Aviation Organization can play in achieving these goals.

Jin Hobby thanked the organizers and the UAE for providing an opportunity for these important discussions, noting that the UAE has led many discussions on the environment and aviation, and has placed itself as a leader in this field.
