We are watching the Syrian authorities as part of our determination of our policy with them in the future

The US State Department spokeswoman Tami Bruce said on Friday that the United States is monitoring the actions of Syrian leaders, while Washington is defining its future policy and continues to be invited to a comprehensive government of civil leadership in Syria.

She added, in a daily press statement: “We are monitoring the actions of the Syrian interim authorities in general, in a number of issues, while we define and think about future American policy towards Syria,” according to Reuters news agency.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Parliament’s deputy, Joe Wilson, on Friday, demanded that the foreign ministers and the treasury be reviewed by the US sanctions imposed on Syria.

In a letter they sent to the two ministers, and published by a Senate Committee, the legislators said that “the sanctions that were imposed, more than ten years ago, targeted a regime that no longer stands, and now threatens to undermine the goals of US national security and obstruct the reconstruction of Syria.”

They added: “While the foreign and treasury ministries are working to formulate a policy towards Syria, at this critical moment, we ask you to amend the comprehensive or ancient sanctions that would undermine the goals of the United States if it remains in place.”

While the legislators stressed that “anti -terrorism measures remain extremely important,” he indicated that measures such as a comprehensive ban on financial services and investment “hinder economic recovery and push Syrians towards illegal markets, and provide opportunities for opponents such as Iran and Russia to consolidate their influence.”

They also stressed the need to make “changes that support stability while continuing to pressure terrorist organizations” in Syria.
