Undoubted fire ending in Spain

The Director of Civil Defense in Spain, Virginia Parkones, told the TV EE yesterday that the end of the fires that swept the country for two weeks and killed four people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares “became close”.

She added: “Nothing is mentioned, and the end has become close,” but it is “treacherous” fires and “we must make a final effort to end this terrible situation.” She emphasized that “the prevailing feeling is that the situation has improved and the worst has ended.”

She pointed out that despite this, there are still “18 active forest fires, including 17, which posed a threat to people and homes,” adding that the Igueena fire, in the area of Castile and Leon (northwest), is a source of concern.

These large fires, especially the western half of the country, especially the Galicia, Castile, Lyon and Extradadora regions, erupted in the midst of a free wave that lasted 16 days, during which the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius across the country and 45 degrees Celsius in many southern regions.

With the end of the heat wave, the height of humidity and the decline in wind strength, “conditions are more suitable for extinguishing fires,” according to Parkones.
