The European Commission expects to increase the Belgian budget deficit to 5.5 % during 2026

Brussels on May 19/ WAM/ The European Commission expected the Belgium’s budget deficit to rise to 5.4 % of GDP this year and 5.5 % next year after it ended in 2024 with a deficit of 4.5 %.
According to the Commission, this deficit may rise to 5.4 % this year, driven by increasing spending on the aging of the population and defense. In addition, the interest expenses will continue to rise.
By 2026, the deficit will reach 5.5 %, mainly due to the high expenses of benefits and contributions in the European budget, although new governmental procedures on the labor market, pensions and taxes will have a positive impact according to the commission.
According to European expectations, Belgium’s public debt is scheduled to increase from 104.7 % at the end of last year to 109.8 % in 2026, with Belgium’s GDP growing by 0.8 % this year and 0.9 % next year.
