The official Russian television broadcast today, Wednesday, clips of a Tsunami wave hitting a coastal town in the far east of the country, sweeping buildings and rubble in the sea.
A 8.8 -magnitude earthquake hit the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of the Russian, which led to evacuations and the issuance of tsunami warnings in parts of the Pacific coast.
But the peninsula authorities later announced the warning of a tsunami.
The height of the waves is 4 meters
In the Russian town of Seviro-Corclick, which includes about 2000 people, located about 350 km southwest of the earthquake center, tsunami hit the port area and flooded a local fish plant, according to the authorities.
The town is located in Paramoshier, one of the Korel Islands, south of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The waves, some of which reached 4 meters high, reached the monument of World War II, the town’s memorial, which is about 400 meters from the coast, according to the mayor, Alexander Ovsianikov.
He explained that most parts of the town are located on heights with a safe one of the floods.
He said at a crisis meeting with officials earlier: “There was enough time, a full hour, everyone was evacuated. All people in a safe area of tsunami.”
The Kremlin stated that all warning systems worked well.
“We thank God for the lack of casualties,” Dmitry Peskov spokesman told reporters.
The wave washed away all tents and buildings
An exploratory mission from the “Russian Geographical Society” was on the neighboring island of Shomasho when he washed away its camp.
“When the wave hit, all we could do was escape in the direction of a more height area, it is difficult as a heavy shoe uses slippery grass and fog.”
She added that “the wave washed away all the tents and buildings, and our belongings on the beach were scattered on hundreds of meters.”
“There are no victims in our ranks, everyone moved quickly, but we lost all our belongings.”
The authorities in the Sakhalin area, which includes the North Corel Islands, announced the state of emergency.
The regional earthquake monitoring service reported that the earthquake was the strongest in the region since 1952, expecting “bounces with a strength of 7.5 degrees.”
