European official: The customs tariff agreement with America is a source "satisfaction" No cause for celebration

BRUSSELE on August 5 / WAM / An official at the European Commission in Brussels announced that the customs tariffs by 15% imposed by the United States on goods coming from the European Union are comprehensive and not subject to the shares system or exceptions, unlike what is in force in some trade agreements with other countries, explaining that this definition framework will be applied to most of the union exports to the United States except steel and aluminum.
The official stressed that this percentage will include cars and spare parts without a ceiling for the permitted quantities. He also pointed out that the agreement represents “the best possible transaction” obtained by the European Union, although the 27 -countries bloc is not considered the agreement to celebrate but rather a source of “relief”, due to its comparison with other deals less appropriate.
The official pointed out that the definitions of medicines and semi -conductors are still zero, but if they rise as a result of an American investigation in imports, the specified ceiling will not exceed 15%. He pointed out that negotiations on a joint statement with Washington to clarify the details in its advanced stages, as the text is almost complete while awaiting a response from the American side to complete it, without setting an appointment for the official announcement. He also pointed out that the talks related to steel takes longer because of the necessity of addressing issues related to quantities, while the European Union is working on setting a list of basic products that will be exempted from the American customs tariffs in the context of what is known as the “zero -zero” principle, with its endeavor to join the largest possible number of products to that list. From the terms of the agreement, the volume of the European Union imports of American bicon will increase.
It is noteworthy that the exports of car and European spare parts to the United States were subject to a customs tariff of 27.5%, but the framework agreement announced last month in Scotland between the European Union and US President Donald Trump stipulated that this percentage be reduced to 15%, which the European official said would “be achieved very soon.”
