Tomorrow the UAE celebrates the “Emirati Women’s Day”, which falls on August 28 of each year, and is a national occasion to pride in the achievements of the UAE’s daughter in light of the support of the wise leadership that believes that empowering women is an empowerment of the entire homeland.
This year’s celebration comes under the slogan “Hand in hand, we celebrate the fifty”, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the General Women’s Union, in a national celebration that embodies the community partnership and the continuous achievements of Emirati women for five decades.

Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Emirates”, President of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation, is the leader of the women’s movement in the UAE, and she is credited with establishing the General Women’s Union, while the approach that it presented in the field of women’s work is characterized by a balance between seeking to open up to the spirit of the times and preserving Arab originality and Islamic tradition Cultural privacy is the only way to achieve the desired progress.

The women’s work was launched in the UAE since February 8, 1973, when the Association of the Renaissance of the Djahian Women was established to be the first women’s gathering in the UAE, and after that the establishment of associations in the various emirates of the various state continued, leading to the establishment of the General Women’s Union in 1975 and annexing all women’s associations in the country.

Expensive national occasion

Noura Khalifa Al -Suwaidi, the Secretary -General of the General Women’s Union, said on this occasion that the Emirati Women’s Day represents a precious national occasion, in which we recall the achievements of the UAE daughter, which has proven over fifty years her ability to give, leadership and active contribution to the national development process.
She emphasized in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, “WAM”, that the occasion reflects the vision of our wise leadership, which believes that investing in women’s capabilities is an essential pillar to enhance sustainable development and build a coherent and prosperous society.

She added that the efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Emirates”, contributed a pivotal role in empowering Emirati women, and consolidating their position in all fields of social, educational and economic life, pointing to the great impact of close cooperation between society and its institutions in supporting the empowerment process and formulating a pioneering national model that appreciates the role of women and enhances their contribution to building the state.

And she considered that the Emirati Women’s Day represents an embodiment of the half -century of achievements that made the history of Emirati women, and laid the established foundations for a real national partnership, stressing that women today are an active partner in formulating the future, and holding the values ​​of the ancient Emirates in leadership, giving and excellence, to inspire future generations to continue the march on the paths of empowerment and success.

She stated that the celebration of Emirati women is a celebration of the homeland. Every achievement achieved by Emirati women represents a bright page in the state’s march and its renaissance, and evidence of the vision of our wise leadership that made the empowerment of women a strategic priority, to ensure a full participation in building a prosperous society and a bright future.

Empowering women and gender balance

The UAE continues to win advanced positions in international reports and global competitiveness indicators concerned with women’s empowerment and gender balance, as it achieved first place regionally within the report of the “gender gap” issued by the World Economic Forum for the year 2025, and the state ranked thirteenth globally and the first in the region in the report of the gender equality index issued by the United Nations Development Program for the year 2025, and achieved 82.5 points Out of 100 in the women’s report, business activities and law issued by the World Bank for the year 2024, and the first rank regionally in the Women, Peace and Security Index issued by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security for the year 2023/2024.

The UAE launched the national policy for women’s empowerment 2023 – 2031, which has strengthened what Emirati women achieved in the field of participation in the process of building the country and achieving development, as women today occupy 50% of the seats of the Federal National Council, and 26% of the cabinet of the women’s component leads vital files such as education, climate change, the environment, the empowerment of society and the family, as well as that Emirati women constitute 71% of the total Emirati workers in the two governmental sectors And private, 63% of leadership positions in the government sector, and 13% of the total ambassadors of the country accredited to the countries of the world.

Emirati women have fought the field of entrepreneurship efficiently and competently, as specialized data indicates that there are more than 25 thousand Emirati businesswomen who possess more than 50 thousand commercial licenses with a total investment exceeding 60 billion dirhams.
In the field of education and technology, 46% of graduates of science, technology, engineering and mathematics specializations in the UAE are women, and 50% of the total workers in the satellite sector in the country as well, while the percentage of women’s participation in the labor market is 55% of the workforce.

Pioneer global model

Today, the UAE is a leading global model in protecting women’s rights thanks to the legislative environment supporting it represented by the constitution and the series of federal laws and ministerial and local decisions that guaranteed equal opportunities between men and women, in addition to national mechanisms and support groups represented in women’s empowerment institutions, headed by the General Women’s Union and the Emirates Council for gender balance that had the greatest role in overcoming difficulties in front of the rise and empowerment of women in a different The fields.

The UAE’s constitution guarantees equal rights for all women and men before the law, obtaining health and educational services and job opportunities, and in this context the approval of the Council of Ministers in 2018 came a project to issue the first legislation of its kind for equal wages and salaries between the sexes, and the issuance of a decree of Federal Law No. 27 of 2018 regarding equality in gender salaries in the federal government sector, and a decree of Federal Law No. 33 of 2021 regarding regulating relationships The work, known as the “UAE Labor Law that applies to the private sector in the country”, and from which Article 4 requires that women be granted a wage similar to the man’s wages in the event that she is doing the same work, or another with equal value.

The efforts of the UAE in the field of empowering women to the whole world extended, as the country launched many programs that support women, including the initiative of Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak to empower women in peace and security, which aims to enhance women’s contributions to spreading a culture of dialogue and peace and achieving security, stability and development, through which more than 500 women were trained, as well as the Arab Observatory for Women’s Development Economic Project that was adopted at the Leadership Summit 2023 to establish a gathering platform Arab countries to support the leadership of women and contribute to the expansion of partnerships between the pioneers of work in the Arab world and the enhancement of the economy, and the initiative of Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak to empower rural women in Africa in the agricultural field and other exceptional initiatives.
