A US court fines Samsung $445.5 million for violating patents

San Jose, California, October 11 / WAM / Yesterday, a jury in the US state of Texas ordered that the South Korean technology company Samsung pay about $445.5 million, due to patent infringement.
The ruling was in favor of the plaintiff, New Hampshire-based Collision Communications, and is a first-degree decision. The damages awarded by juries are sometimes reduced upon appeal.
Collision said that smartphones, tablets, laptops, refrigerators, washing machines and other home appliances produced by Samsung violate patents in all fields.
The four patents relate to technologies for reducing signal interference in network communications.
Samsung said the patents were invalid, but failed to convince a jury in Texas, which awarded Collision about $445.5 million.
The jury also concluded that Samsung intentionally infringed the patents, which could result in a larger compensation award.
