Dubai, 18 October / WAM / The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) received a high-level international technical honor from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in recognition of its pioneering contributions in the field of plant production and the development of sustainable agricultural systems capable of adapting to climate change in dry and salt-affected environments.
Dr. Tarifa Al Zaabi, Director-General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), received the honor from Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, during the first global technical honoring ceremony of its kind, which was held at the organization’s headquarters in Rome recently.
This honor is a new initiative launched by FAO to honor institutions that have effectively contributed to transforming agricultural and food systems through evidence-based scientific innovation, and the ceremony coincided with the organization’s celebrations of the 80th anniversary of its founding and World Food Day 2025.
On this occasion, Dr. Tarifa Al Zaabi said: We are honored by this honor from FAO, which confirms the importance of collaborative science and innovation based on partnerships in facing global agricultural challenges, adding that it embodies the sincere efforts of ICBA’s scientists, experts, and partners.
Al Zaabi dedicated this appreciation to the centre’s founders, the government of the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Development Bank, in appreciation of their vision and continued support, and stressed that this honor is a testament to the confidence of partners and a commitment to continuing the process of innovation to empower societies and support global food security.
This award comes as a result of ICBA’s efforts spanning 25 years, during which it focused on developing varieties tolerant to environmental stresses such as drought and salinity, and sustainable solutions to improve soil health and water conservation.
The Centre, which has its headquarters in the UAE and operates in more than 40 countries, plays a pioneering role in integrating science, technology and policies to address the challenges of water scarcity, soil degradation and food insecurity, continuing to implement its strategy for the period 2024-2034 to enhance productivity and climate resilience in marginal environments.
