From food to exercise… Habits that keep you away from breast cancer

Nutritionist Abeer Abu Rjaili from the Diet of The Town Clinic explains that a balanced diet plays an essential role in prevention, noting that the Mediterranean diet is one of the most effective dietary patterns in reducing the risk of breast cancer, because it relies on vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil, and avoids fatty foods. Manufactured and rich in sugars.
Abu Rjaili stresses the importance of quitting smoking, as it is considered one of the most prominent risk factors for cancer, and passive smoking may increase the possibility of breast cancer. She adds that maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D is necessary for a healthy body, after studies have shown that its deficiency is linked to cancer, so it is recommended to be exposed to sunlight daily for a short period and eat oily fish such as salmon, while consulting a doctor about nutritional supplements when needed.
Also, a healthy weight and regular physical activity play an important preventive role, as the risk of infection increases in women who suffer from obesity, especially after menopause. It is recommended to do at least two and a half hours of exercise weekly to maintain the body’s balance and health.
On the other hand, the specialist warns against excessive use of hormonal treatments after menopause, because of their possible association with an increased risk of infection, indicating the possibility of adopting natural or herbal alternatives under the supervision of a doctor. It also confirms that breastfeeding in turn contributes to prevention, as its protective effect increases the longer it lasts.
Regarding environmental factors, research indicates that working night shifts and prolonged exposure to air pollutants and industrial materials may increase the possibility of infection, which requires ensuring good ventilation of homes and staying away from polluted environments as much as possible.
