The Security Council discusses the Gaza file, climate, security, Yemen and Mali

The UN Security Council will begin its programs this week after Sierra Leone assumed the presidency of the Council for the month of November, by holding a series of closed meetings and consultations to discuss the most prominent political and security issues on the United Nations agenda.

The Council will begin today, Monday (November 3), with consultations to adopt the provisional program for the Council’s work during the month, while tomorrow, Tuesday, it will hold a special meeting with the troop-contributing countries to the United Nations Interim Force in Abyei, with Martha Popeye, Assistant Secretary-General for African Affairs, to present Political affairs, peacebuilding and peace operations, a briefing on the situation in the region.

 

The day after tomorrow, Wednesday, members will hear a briefing from the Chairman of the Yemen Sanctions Committee, Ambassador Sanjin Kim from South Korea, about the work of the committee. On the same day, an open meeting will be held on the Abyei Force, during which the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, Guang Kong, will provide a briefing, followed by closed consultations among members.

 

On Thursday (November 6), a high-level meeting will be held on the relationship between climate and security under the title “The Impact of Armed Conflicts and Security Risks Resulting from Climate Change,” with the participation of the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Inger Andersen, and Professor of International Law Charles Gallo, and a representative of civil society.

 

The diplomatic missions participating in the Council publish their monthly report “Expectations for November 2025.” At the beginning of the week, including backgrounds and analyzes of the month’s files.

 

In a related context, the current members of the Security Council participate alongside the five new members – Bahrain, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia – In the annual workshop organized by Finland on November 6 and 7, in preparation for the start of their permanent membership in the Council next year.

 

The Council is expected to continue to follow developments in the situation in Gaza after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on October 10, and is also closely monitoring the situation in Mali, which is witnessing an escalation in attacks carried out by the Al-Qaeda-linked Group to Support Islam and Muslims near the capital. Bamako.

 

Members also continue to negotiate new draft resolutions, including: renewing the sanctions regime imposed on ISIS. And Al-Qaeda, a presidential statement on older persons in armed conflict initiated by Slovenia, a draft resolution on youth, peace and security presented by Guyana and Sierra Leone, a draft Russian statement on developments in the situation in Venezuela, in addition to discussions on the process of selecting the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
