Floods in Sri Lanka claim the lives of nearly 200 people

The Disaster Management Authority in Sri Lanka announced today, Sunday, that the death toll from massive floods and landslides resulting from torrential rains had risen to at least 193 people, in addition to the loss of 228 others.

The authority stated – according to what was reported by Channel News Asia, in its English-language bulletin – that the floods and landslides caused the destruction of more than 25,000 homes, resulting in the displacement of 147,000 people to temporary shelters. Forces from the army, navy and air force were deployed, along with civilian workers and volunteers, to assist in relief efforts.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had declared a state of emergency and appealed to the international community to provide aid, and India was the first to respond, sending relief supplies and two helicopters with their crews to carry out missions. Rescue, Pakistan also sent rescue teams, and Japan announced its intention to send a team to assess urgent needs, and pledged to provide more assistance.

This cyclone is the most dangerous natural disaster that Sri Lanka has witnessed since 2017, when floods and landslides claimed the lives of more than 200 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.
