The Bulgarian government withdraws the draft 2026 budget after widespread popular protests

The Bulgarian government officially decided to withdraw the draft 2026 budget, after widespread popular protests, considered one of the largest demonstrations in the country in recent decades.
The government announced – through its media center, today, Tuesday – that the withdrawal of the budget also includes the proposed financial frameworks for the National Health Insurance Fund and the Guarantee Fund.
The decision came after mass protests broke out yesterday evening, Monday, across the country, as protesters criticized the budget draft that raises taxes and social contributions to the private sector, while directing more money to the government sector.
The capital, Sofia, witnessed the participation of tens of thousands, while other major cities such as Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Dobrich, Sliven, Veliko Tarnovo, Schuman, Ruse, Lovce, Blagoevgrad, and Götze Delchev also held large demonstrations.
The Council of Ministers also formally proposed to the National Assembly to adopt a resolution to withdraw the draft state budget law for 2026, during a government meeting without attendance. Members.
