Lactic acid…the gentle alternative to retinoids for sensitive skin

Lactic acid is classified as an alpha hydroxy acid, but it has a gentler formula that combines exfoliation and moisturization at the same time, which makes it suitable for sensitive, dry skin, or skin prone to eczema and rosacea. It gently removes dead cells, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier instead of weakening it, which results in smoothness, radiance, and an improvement in the appearance of fine lines.
Thanks to its larger molecular size compared to other acids, lactic acid penetrates slowly and stays closer to the skin’s surface, reducing the risk of redness or irritation. With regular use, it helps even out skin tone and improve its texture, although it is not as effective as retinoids in stimulating collagen or treating deep wrinkles.
It is a suitable option for those whose skin cannot tolerate strong actives, whether as a permanent alternative to retinoids or as a temporary solution when the skin barrier is weakened. It can be used in low concentrations in creams or lotions, while avoiding applying it to cracked or inflamed skin.
To achieve the best results, it is recommended to start with a concentration between 5 and 10%, two to three times a week, and preferably use it at night while adhering to sunscreen during the day. Despite its gentle nature, overuse of lactic acid remains a risk factor, especially when repeated with more than one product in the same routine. Irritation does not result from the ingredient itself, but rather from misuse or buildup of concentrations.
In short, lactic acid is not a complete replacement for retinoids, but it is a smart and balanced option for sensitive skin looking for gradual rejuvenation and safe results without stress.
