A cosmetic product used by millions of women may destroy the tear film

Australian ophthalmologist Jacqueline Peltz warned against daily use of waterproof mascara, considering it to be one of the most harmful cosmetics to eye health, due to its direct effect on the tear layer that keeps the eye moisturized and protected.

According to what was reported by the Daily Mail, these types of mascaras contain substances that dry the eyelashes to fix the color, but at the same time they dry out the tear film, which leads to burning, redness, blurred vision, and a constant feeling of discomfort, especially for those who already suffer from eye allergies or dryness.

Peltz explained that the problem is not limited to the formula only, but extends to the method of removal, as waterproof mascara requires stronger rubbing and harsher chemicals, which increases eye irritation and damage to the delicate tissues around it.

Similar warnings were issued by Canadian ophthalmologist Julian Prussia, who confirmed that waterproof makeup is the worst of all for those suffering from a defect in the meibomian glands, which are the sebaceous glands that maintain the stability of the tear film. The malfunction of these glands directly leads to chronic dry eyes.

For this reason, experts advise using water-soluble products or those recommended by ophthalmologists, instead of water-resistant products.

Specialists also alerted to the presence of dangerous ingredients in some types of mascara, including butylhydroxyanisole, which is classified as a possible carcinogen, and benzalkonium chloride, which may destroy sebaceous glands within minutes, in addition to formaldehyde, parabens, and phenoxyethanol, which are substances linked to eye irritation, skin disorders, and hormonal effects.

The bottom line, according to ophthalmologists, is that the quick beauty provided by waterproof mascara may come at the expense of eye health in the long term, which makes staying away from it a preventive option rather than a cosmetic one.
