Macron and Lula call for strengthening the role of the United Nations in response to the establishment "Peace Council"


The two Brazilian Presidents, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and the French Emmanuel Macron to strengthen the role of United Nations, in response to "Peace Council" Created by the US President Donald Trump, according to a statement issued by Brasilia.
France and Brazil were invited to join this new body, but Paris rejected the offer, while Lula expressed a desire to limit the scope of its work to the Gaza issue.
A statement by the Brazilian presidency stated that the two presidents stressed during the conversation, which lasted about an hour, the "Strengthening the United Nations, and agreed that initiatives related to peace and security must be consistent with the mandates of the Security Council".
Last week, the White House announced the establishment of Davos "Peace Council" headed by Trump, to be part of the plan to end the war between the Gaza Strip, but its establishment charter gave Trump a broad role, which raised fears of the formation of a competing body for the United Nations.

A seat for Palestine

Macron’s call to his Brazilian counterpart came after a phone call between the latter and Trump.
Lula asked Trump to limit his work "Peace Council" Which he established on the Gaza issue and to include a seat for Palestine.
Lula had on Friday accused the American president of seeking to become the master of a new United Nations by establishing "Peace Council"And expanding its role to include international conflicts.

The situation in Venezuela

On the other hand, the Brazilian and French presidents touched on the situation in Venezuela, following the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro during a lightning American military operation carried out in early January.
The Brazilian statement indicated that Lula and Macron condemned resorting to force in violation of international law, and stressed the importance of peace and stability in South America and the world.
