Extra reassurance for the mother or an unnecessary source of anxiety?

With the rapid development in technology, baby monitoring devices have become one of the most prominent supplies on newborn baby preparation lists, especially with the availability of high-resolution cameras, the possibility of direct communication via phone, and devices that measure breathing or movement. However, the question that occupies the minds of many families remains: Are these devices a real necessity or just an additional means of reassurance?

Specialists believe that the answer varies from one family to another, depending on the nature of the home, the age of the child, and the needs of the parents.

Baby monitoring devices are divided into two main types: audio devices that transmit the sound of the child’s crying or movement, and visual devices (cameras) that allow watching the child directly via a dedicated screen or application on the phone. Some newer versions also provide additional features such as measuring room temperature, tracking movement, and sending instant alerts.

The usefulness of these devices is most prominent in large or multi-storey homes, where the child sleeps in a room far from his parents, allowing him to be monitored without the need to repeatedly enter the room. It may also be useful during nap times, as it gives parents an opportunity to complete household chores or work remotely while checking on the child. In cases of premature babies or those suffering from health problems, the devices may provide an additional amount of psychological comfort, with the emphasis being that they do not replace medical follow-up when needed.

On the other hand, devices may not be necessary if the child sleeps in the same room as his parents, or in small homes where his crying is easy to hear. Some studies indicate that excessive monitoring, especially with devices that send frequent alerts, may increase parents’ anxiety rather than reassure them.

Experts stress that monitoring devices are not a means of prevention against sudden infant death syndrome, and cannot replace basic safety guidelines, which include placing the child on his back while sleeping, using a safe bed free of pillows and toys, and maintaining an appropriate room temperature.

They also point out the importance of paying attention to the issue of privacy and digital security, especially in devices connected to the Internet, which may be vulnerable to hacking if they are not well secured. It is recommended to choose devices from reliable companies, update their software regularly, use strong passwords, and not share login data with untrusted parties.

Thus, child monitoring devices remain a supportive tool that may be useful according to the circumstances of each family, provided that they do not turn into a permanent source of tension, and that parents’ awareness and direct supervision remain the basic foundation of child care.
