A UN report reveals the inability to verify the cessation of uranium enrichment activities in Iran

A UN monitoring agency report seen by The Associated Press said the UN agency was unable to verify whether Iran had frozen all uranium enrichment.

The IAEA report stressed that for this reason, it “cannot verify whether Iran has suspended all enrichment activities” or verify “the size of Iran’s stock of uranium in the damaged nuclear facilities.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency stated that it observed, through analysis of satellite images, “regular activity of vehicles around the entrance to the underground complex in Isfahan.”

The agency’s report on Friday warned that due to the lack of access to declared uranium enrichment facilities in Iran, “the agency cannot provide any information about the current size, composition, or location of the enriched uranium stockpile in Iran.”

The report stressed that “there is an urgent need to deal with the continuing lack of knowledge regarding all nuclear materials that were previously declared in the affected facilities in Iran.”

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran maintains a stockpile of 440.9 kilograms of enriched uranium with a purity of up to 60%, and there is a short technical step that separates this level from the 90% level used in making weapons.

According to IAEA guidelines, such highly enriched nuclear material should normally be verified monthly.
