The Security Council discusses developments in the situation in Lebanon

It is noteworthy that France was the one that requested the meeting, and was joined by Bahrain, Denmark, Greece, Latvia and the United Kingdom.

On the ground, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) explained yesterday that fighting is continuing across the Blue Line, where missiles were launched towards Israel, in exchange for Israeli air strikes and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon.

The UNHCR stated that the number of registered displaced people in Lebanon has reached 759,300 people, noting that the number of people who are forced to flee their homes is increasing at a rate of 100,000 displaced people every day. She warned of the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Lebanon with every day that the aerial bombardment continues.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that all residents of the areas south of the Litani River, parts of Baalbek Governorate and the Bekaa Valley, and large sectors of the southern suburbs of Beirut, have become trapped in a cycle of violence with the continuation of air strikes and displacement orders.

The United Nations is working with its partners to intensify urgent humanitarian aid to the displaced in Lebanon.

United Nations spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, stressed the urgent need to reduce the escalation immediately, calling on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, including protecting civilians, protecting civilian infrastructure, and protecting health care facilities. He also stressed the need for humanitarian aid access to be safe and sustainable so that it reaches all those in need.
