The heat wave in southern China is caused by climate change…an expert explains

Areas in southern China have recently witnessed a wave of A typhoonon land, and strong winds of the 12th magnitude were recorded across several urban districts.

Major weather changes

The chief expert at the Guangdong Provincial Climate Center of the Guangdong Meteorological Directorate points out "Wu Hongyue"points out that the real concern lies not in the severity of a single event but in the increasingly clear trend that Weather and Climate Extremes have become more frequent, stronger and more severe in recent years.

Data show that over the past 65 years, the average annual temperature in Guangdong has risen by 0.22 degrees Celsius per decade, while the average number of hot days has risen by about 3.5 days per decade, and the number of heavy rain days has risen to a record 10.7 days in 2024, compared with Only 3.6 days in 1963.

Measures for early monitoring

Guangdong Province’s action plan for climate change adaptation (2025-2035) was issued in February 2025, and the main measures include strengthening monitoring and early warning systems against extreme weather, building sponge cities to mitigate flooding in urban areas, and improving prevention of typhoons, floods and other disaster risks.

It is reported that Expert Wu said that urban construction and renewal should be based on new climate data rather than past experiences, and confronting the global challenge of climate change is the only way forward through scientific response.
