Etihad Airways unveils six new destinations in Africa

ABU DHABI, 17 APRIL / WAM / Etihad Airways announced today the addition of new destinations from Abu Dhabi to Eritrea, Ghana, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, and two destinations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A statement by the carrier said: The new services reflect investment in markets with strong growth, which supports the growing demand for connectivity in the fields of trade, shipping and transportation.

The new move builds on Etihad Airways’ recently announced expansion into China, including increasing the number of flights and deepening the partnership with China Eastern Airlines, which will help make Abu Dhabi a major gateway between Africa, India and Asia, and enable more efficient movement of goods, investments and people between two of the fastest growing regions in the world.

This is also in line with the growing economic relations between the UAE and Africa, with the increasing volume of trade, investment and business partnerships in sectors including energy, infrastructure, mining and logistics services.

Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen its role in facilitating these flows and supporting the strengthening of economic cooperation between the two regions.

At the same time, these new destinations complement Etihad Airways’ strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, which this month celebrates 80 years of operations, enhancing connectivity across the African continent.

Antonaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, said: “Africa is a natural and important step in Etihad’s network strategy. These markets are witnessing strong growth driven by trade, investment and population growth, and our role is to provide the air connectivity that facilitates this growth.”

He noted that demand for air transport services in key African markets exceeds current supply, especially in the shipping and trade sectors, and this expansion is a direct response to this structural opportunity.

He continued: When we expand our network in Africa in addition to our services to China, we will provide a more effective corridor linking Africa, the Middle East and Asia via Abu Dhabi.

This expansion is critical for sectors as diverse as manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure, where speed, reliability and direct access to markets are crucial factors.
