Because of her quick second marriage…an Algerian singer was sent to prison (photos)

Algerian singer Warda Smati’s announcement of her second marriage shortly after her divorce, and before the end of the legal waiting period, led to her being placed in pretrial detention, amid rapid judicial developments in the state of Oran, western Algeria.

The chapters of controversy began with the announcement of her divorce from her first husband, before she released a song that directly attacked him. It quickly spread widely and sparked an intense debate among followers, and then came back and took center stage again by announcing her second marriage only a few days after the separation.

This rapid sequence of events sparked a wave of criticism and legal and religious questions, especially since the timing of the new marriage was considered a subject of widespread controversy, which moved the issue from a discussion on social media to an official judicial process.

According to local media, Warda Samati was arrested and placed in temporary detention, against the backdrop of complaints and legal actions related to the Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments, in cases related to statements and content that were considered contrary to public values and morals.

The circulation of video clips attributed to her and related statements also contributed to escalating the controversy and giving an ethical and legal character to the issue.

Data indicate that her arrest came after a live broadcast during her second marriage ceremony, in which she appeared hiding her husband’s identity with a mask, which was considered a provocation to public opinion, which prompted the Public Prosecution in Oran to issue a decision to place her in temporary detention pending the completion of investigations.

For its part, specialists explain that the Ministry of Religious Affairs can intervene as a plaintiff in cases that are seen as affecting religious or societal values, provided that the file is later referred to the judiciary to decide on it in accordance with legal principles and to study the evidence before issuing any ruling.
