The Abu Dhabi City Municipality will plant 5,000 new trees during 2026 to enhance sustainability

ABU DHABI, 4 JUNE / WAM / The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has completed the planting of more than 2,000 trees during the year 2025, and continues to work on planting 5,000 trees during the year 2026 in the walkways and paths on Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland, as part of its project to plant paths and paths, in a way that consolidates the concepts of urban comfort and a healthy environment for residents and visitors, and enhances the overall aesthetic appearance.
The project comes in line with the vision of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to enhance the quality of life and achieve environmental sustainability, through developing green infrastructure that supports the well-being of society and keeps pace with the aspirations of the modern city.
Engineer Majid Abdul Kathiri, Executive Director of the Operation and Maintenance Sector at the Abu Dhabi City Municipality, confirmed that this project reflects the municipality’s commitment to developing a sustainable urban infrastructure based on enhancing the quality of life, pointing out that expanding the green area is one of the main pillars in building a more flexible and attractive city that meets the aspirations of the community and keeps pace with the future ambitions of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
He added that most of the paths and walkways on Abu Dhabi Island had previously been covered by afforestation works, while the municipality is currently continuing efforts to complete afforestation of sites that require additional planting, as afforestation work has been completed along the paths and walkways in the streets and public parks, approximately 24 linear kilometers.
He explained that the trees planted within the project include local species characterized by their high ability to adapt to the climate of the UAE, most notably the Ghaf trees, in addition to carefully selected species that include cassia, neem, poinciana, pongamia, ficus, and fruit trees, as this diverse plant assortment contributes to achieving natural shading of walkways and paths in the future, while enhancing vegetation cover.
The work so far has included planting 21 sites on Abu Dhabi Island with more than 2,000 diverse trees planted during 2025, while the municipality continues to implement the project phases during the current year, to plant about 1,800 additional trees in new sites on the island, and 3,200 trees in various locations on the mainland, with a total of 5,000 shade trees on walkways, bicycle paths, and running paths.
The project is a sustainable investment that contributes to reducing temperatures, providing natural shade, and improving air quality by reducing pollutants, reducing dust and noise, as well as supporting biodiversity, enhancing the general civilized appearance of the city, providing a comfortable environment for residents and attractive to visitors, in addition to contributing to enhancing the well-being of the community.
