Argentina breaks Switzerland’s stubbornness with a hat-trick and sets up a fiery match with England in the World Cup semi-finals

The Argentine national team completed the semi-final round in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, following its 3-1 victory over the Swiss national team after extra time, on Saturday evening, local time, in the quarter-finals of the competition.
The Argentine team scored early in the tenth minute through Alexis McAllister in the tenth minute, but Dan Ndoye equalized for the Swiss team in the 67th minute.
The Swiss national team was forced to play with ten players, after its star player Brielle Embolo was expelled in a controversial decision by the match referee, who gave him a second yellow card for deliberately claiming a fall during one of the shared balls in the middle of the field, after resorting to the video assistant referee (VAR) technology, which applied the (mistaken identity) protocol.
The two teams were unable to score during the remaining minutes of regular time, which ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing them to play a half-hour extra time in two halves.
During extra time, Julián Alvarez scored the second goal for Argentina in the 112th minute, scoring his first goal in the current World Cup and his fifth goal in his World Cup career, before Lautaro Martinez added the third goal in the first minute of extra time in the fourth period, scoring his second goal with the team in the current World Cup.
The Argentine national team, which won the title in 1978, 1986 and 2022, had a fiery encounter in the semi-finals with the English national team, which beat the Norwegian national team 2-1, after resorting to extra time earlier on Saturday evening, local time.
