Georgia: Human Rights Commissioner calls for protection of freedom of expression and assembly amid violent protests in the capital

Mr. Türk’s statement on Monday came in the wake of four nights of violent protests in the capital, Tbilisi, over the Prime Minister’s announcement to postpone negotiations on joining the European Union. Security forces reportedly used pepper spray, water cannons, and chemicals against demonstrators and journalists, and that some of them were chased and beaten by unidentified individuals.
