Tens of thousands displaced…victims resulting from floods in Malaysia and Thailand

Massive floods caused by monsoon rains have killed more than 30 people and displaced tens of thousands in Malaysia and southern Thailand, while the two countries prepared shelters and evacuation plans in anticipation of more heavy rains.
In Malaysia, floods killed at least six people, and vast areas of rice fields were submerged, causing millions of dollars in losses to farmers, and causing damage to roads, homes, and public facilities in Kelantan state and other regions of Malaysia.
While about 85,000 people in seven states remained in schools, community halls and relief centers, after they were moved from their homes due to the floods.

Disaster prevention

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said: “The cost of repairing the infrastructure damaged by the floods is estimated at $224 million.”
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation also reported yesterday that 25 people died in floods in the southern part of the country during the week, more than 300,000 families were affected, and many schools and 98 health facilities were forced to close.
The Ministry of Health in Thailand confirmed that more than 34,000 people were evacuated to 491 government shelters last Monday.
