The UAE ranks fifth globally in the UNIDO Quality Infrastructure Index for Sustainable Development

ABU DHABI, 8 December / WAM / The United Arab Emirates advanced six places in the Quality Infrastructure Index for Sustainable Development for the year 2024, issued by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), from 11th place to fifth place globally, within the category of countries with a high gross domestic product. Which ranges from US$100 billion to US$1 trillion.

This indicator is considered an effective tool to measure the strength of the quality infrastructure, as the UAE’s progress of six places in two years reflects the advanced UAE capabilities in the quality infrastructure system, at the level of technical legislation, standard specifications, standards, accreditation, conformity assessment, oversight and market survey, through The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, in coordination and integration with partners from local government agencies in each emirate, with the participation of the private sector.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, confirmed on this occasion that, thanks to the vision and directives of the wise leadership to support the growth of the industrial sector in the country, ensure the sustainability of supply chains, and enhance the sector’s contribution to diversifying the economy and supporting sustainable development, this advanced classification comes as an affirmation of the role of the UAE. A leader in the quality infrastructure system regionally and internationally, especially at the level of specifications, legislation and technical regulations that support industry and sustainable production.

He added that the continuous development in the capabilities of the UAE system of quality infrastructure reflects international confidence in standard specifications, legislation, technical regulations and conformity programmes, which are compatible with international best practices in efficiency, competitiveness and productive quality. It is also one of the pillars of the national strategy for industry and advanced technology, “Project 300 Billion”. .

The quality infrastructure system constitutes an important factor in attracting industrial investments and supporting our national economy, by enhancing trade exchange, removing technical obstacles to trade, and supporting the UAE’s role as a major partner in shaping the future of quality infrastructure at the international level.

For his part, His Excellency Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, stressed that the national strategy for industry and advanced technology focuses on supporting the growth of the national industry, enhancing its competitiveness, and creating an attractive business environment for local and international investors in the industrial sector, in a way that supports the flexibility and sustainability of supply chains, and enhances local self-sufficiency. .

He pointed out that the results of the index report reflect national efforts in creating the legislative and technical environment that supports confidence, efficiency, safety, sustainability and innovation. The Ministry works with strategic partners to continuously modernize the system, to empower the industrial sector and enhance the commitment of industrial companies to standards of quality, efficiency and merit, to achieve growth and ensure its sustainability, and reduce… Resource consumption and promoting sustainable industrial practices.

He added that the Ministry is working in cooperation with its strategic partners from local government agencies and the private sector to promote growth and provide the capabilities and advantages that support the competitiveness of Emirati products in the markets, in addition to launching initiatives that support growth and competitiveness, such as the “Make in the Emirates Forum,” which will witness a new qualitative breakthrough in international expansion and spread. Hosted at the ADNEC Abu Dhabi Center from May 19-22, 2025, all these efforts are integrated to enhance the growth and competitiveness of UAE industries at the local and international levels.

For her part, Her Excellency Dr. Farah Al Zarouni, Assistant Undersecretary for the Standards and Legislation Sector in the Ministry, confirmed that the year 2024 is considered a year of achievements in the quality infrastructure file in the Emirates, after the country won a few days ago to chair the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (SMIIC). For the period 2025-2027, as well as membership in the Organization’s Board of Directors, Standardization Council, and Accreditation Council, in addition to its winning over the past two months of membership in the Organization’s Council. International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the Board of Directors of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

She added that these efforts support the country’s strategic goals and its role as a major supporter of innovation in the region, and in meeting the needs of partners from the government and private sectors, and consumers, as the quality infrastructure system constitutes one of the pillars and enablers of industrial growth in the UAE, and contributes to supporting these goals through implementing More than 27 thousand standards and technical regulations in the country in vital and priority sectors for industry and the national economy, enhancing flexibility and competitiveness, and removing technical obstacles to trade, through integrated efforts. Between the Ministry and partners in local government agencies and the private sector, to facilitate the access of Emirati products to new markets.

For his part, His Excellency Engineer Abdullah Al Yazidi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, said that the country’s achievement of fifth place in the world in the Global Quality Infrastructure Index for Sustainable Development for the year 2024 is a prominent achievement that expresses the country’s commitment to enhancing the quality of infrastructure and developing its systems.

He stressed that this success is an embodiment of the wise vision and continuous efforts made by the wise leadership to achieve sustainable development and enhance the country’s competitiveness in global markets, and demonstrates the integrated efforts being made in the areas of quality, specifications and standards, developing laboratories, and strengthening national quality policies. This achievement also enhances the ability to Attracting investments and enhancing trade exchange, which contributes to supporting the national economy.
