The launch of the World Desalination Conference 2024 in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, December 9, 2024 – The World Desalination Conference 2024, hosted by the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, began today, and continues until December 12 at the ADNEC Abu Dhabi Center, bringing together an elite group of sector leaders, experts, and innovators from different parts of the world to discuss one of the world’s greatest pressing challenges. The opening was attended by His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and His Excellency Engineer Awaida Murshid Al Marar, Head of the Department of Energy in the Arab Republic of Egypt. His Excellency Engineer Awaida Murshid Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, stressed the importance of the conference, which is held at a time that coincides with the UAE’s celebrations of the 53rd Union Day, pointing out that this event represents an opportunity to reflect on the UAE’s exceptional march towards global leadership in the field of innovation and sustainability.

He said that the conference addresses a challenge no less important than life itself, which is securing water for the future of present and future generations, pointing out that water is not just a natural resource, but rather the pulse of life and the foundation of civilizations, and that with increasing demand and environmental pressures, securing it has become a global issue that requires work in the spirit of One, long-term view.

Engineer Al Marar highlighted a number of achievements achieved in the water sector in Abu Dhabi, including a full commitment to producing 98% of water in 2035 using sustainable technologies that reduce the carbon footprint through reverse osmosis, and a commitment in the same year to 60% of electricity production. In Abu Dhabi from clean sources supported by pioneering projects in the fields of nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy and energy storage.

He pointed out the importance of operating the Al Taweelah desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology, which is one of the largest plants in the world, with a production capacity of 200 million gallons per day, using innovative technologies that contributed to reducing energy consumption, praising the Mohammed bin Zayed Water Initiative, which will contribute to advancing the wheel of innovation and creating… Sustainable solutions to water challenges around the world, noting the existence of an integrated strategy for all water sources to achieve water sustainability and maximize the social and economic return of every drop of water.

He stressed that all of these projects represent a reflection of a broader vision that includes integrated management of water resources in Abu Dhabi, and that the conference constitutes a platform for bright minds working to build partnerships, create solutions, and transform ambitions into a tangible reality that benefits people and places.

Fadi Goiz, President of the International Desalination Association, spoke about the urgent necessity of addressing the water scarcity crisis, and the importance of the conference’s role in sharing visions, experiences and decision-making, as it is an exceptional opportunity to redouble and devote joint efforts to reaching innovative solutions to water challenges.

He called on all concerned parties to cooperate, innovate and take purposeful steps towards achieving water security in the future, indicating that the conference will review the latest technologies related to current and future water challenges, and develop effective policies towards achieving water security for all in the future.

It is noteworthy that the World Desalination Conference 2024 is an interactive global platform that allows concerned parties within the desalination sector to review global trends and the latest innovative technologies that play a role in the future of the sector, and more than 200 speakers from more than 40 countries participate in it.

In more than 100 dialogue sessions, panel discussions, and workshops, experts will discuss the latest innovations in the fields of water desalination, reuse, and sustainable management of water resources.

The most prominent activities of the conference include the Leaders’ Summit, which will be held on December 10, and will discuss the most important innovative solutions to address water scarcity and enhance sustainability that will achieve water security, in addition to an awards ceremony for those who have achieved achievements in the fields of sustainability, water desalination and reuse on December 11.
