“Abu Dhabi Development” funds a strategic project to enhance water security in Rwanda

ABU DHABI, December 11, 2017 – The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed, with the Government of Rwanda, a loan agreement worth 92 million dirhams, equivalent to “25 million US dollars”, aimed at financing a project to expand the water transmission and distribution systems of the Karenga station. The strategic project will contribute to achieving Rwanda’s national goals by enhancing the sustainability of its water resources and achieving water security in the country, within the framework of the Fund’s ongoing efforts to support development projects in various parts of the world, and in an effort to achieve the most prominent objectives of the sixth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 related to ensuring the availability of clean water. .

The agreement was signed by His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and His Excellency John Merenge, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the country, in the presence of a number of officials from both sides.

Al Suwaidi said that this agreement comes within the framework of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development’s commitment to finance infrastructure projects that support the achievement of economic and social development in the beneficiary countries, and reflects the Fund’s keenness to strengthen and develop strategic companies with the Republic of Rwanda in a way that contributes to the development of various vital sectors.
He pointed out that financing the project to expand the water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenga Water Treatment Plant represents an important step towards providing clean and sustainable water supplies to key areas in Rwanda, which will contribute to overcoming the challenge it faces by raising the efficiency of the water system and enhancing the use of technologies. Modern technologies that support the achievement of water security.

For his part, John Meringue expressed his happiness with the distinguished cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which continues its success in consolidating the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in achieving sustainable development for the peoples of the world, pointing out that the project to expand the water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenga station is a fundamental project that will work to Achieving his country’s national goals, which aim to sustainably provide clean water to the population, and develop water transmission and distribution networks to meet the various needs of the areas surrounding the project.

He added that financing this vital project will contribute to raising the standard of living in the region by creating many job opportunities for the population. It will also improve water transportation and distribution networks in the country to cover the increasing demand, which will put Rwanda on the right path to achieve its development plans and national goals.

It is worth noting that the project is part of the comprehensive program aimed at supplying the capital, Kigali, with water and achieving self-sufficiency. It includes the establishment of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 36 thousand cubic meters per day, in addition to expanding water transportation and distribution systems to reach a number of major areas in the city of Kigali, and ensuring Adequate water supply for the population.
