UN: The images from Saydnaya represent only a fraction of the horrors of the prison system in Syria

Geir Pedersen, the UN envoy, said in a press statement: “Despite extensive documentation and testimony, they represent only a fraction of the horrors of the prison system. These images are a profound testament to the unspeakable suffering and pain endured by detainees, their families and their loved ones.”
He stressed the need to secure detention sites, mass graves and related documents to assist families in their search for justice and accountability. He said priority must be given to tracing missing persons, ensuring families get the clarity they desperately need and preserving and meticulously documenting evidence to ensure accountability under international humanitarian law.
He said that Justice for victims and their families is not only a right, but also essential for recovery and prevention of further violations.
The Special Envoy called on all parties and relevant specialized organizations to give priority to the humanitarian needs of those recently released and the families still searching for them, grant independent monitors unrestricted access and adhere to the obligations of international law.
