Trump calls for the suspension of a law that threatens to ban the TikTok application in America

US President-elect Donald Trump called on the Supreme Court to suspend a law that threatens to impose a ban on TikTok on the eve of his inauguration on January 20, if ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns the application, does not agree to sell it.
In a memo to the Supreme Court, Trump’s legal team wrote that “in light of the novelty and difficulty of this case, the Court should consider delaying the statutory deadline to allow more latitude to address these issues” in order to “allow the opportunity for a political resolution.”

The issue of banning “Tik Tok” in America

Trump’s lawyers explained in their memorandum that the next president opposes banning the application “at this stage” and wants to resolve this issue, once he takes office on January 20, that is, the day after the date set to ban TikTok if the Chinese company does not agree to sell it.

According to the memo, “President Trump alone has the deal-making experience, electoral mandate, and political will to negotiate a solution to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns expressed by the state.”

Using TikTok in America

Last April, the US Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of a law requiring the parent company of TikTok to sell its American activities before January 19, under penalty of banning the application in the United States.
The law aims to prevent TikTok users, who number 170 million in the United States, from being exposed to the risk of being spied on or manipulated by the Chinese government.
